Recently, Prof. Guoqing Pan, from the Institute of Advanced Materials, School of Materials Science and Engineering, JSU, was invited by the ACS flag journal Accounts of Chemical Research for writing a review paper to summarize their own research in the field of dynamic biointerfaces for the past few years. The invited review, entitled “Dynamic Synthetic Biointerfaces: From Reversible Chemical Interactions to Tunable Biological Effects” (Acc. Chem. Res., DOI: 10.1021/acs.accounts.8b00604), is the first paper in this journal from a JSU’s research group, and Prof. Pan is the independent corresponding author.

Pan’s group has been focusing on smart polymers and advanced materials for biomedical applications in the past 10 years. To mimic the dynamic property in extracellular matrix, the group pioneers the use of reversible covalent bonds, metal coordinative interactions and the molecular affinity of molecularly imprinted synthetic receptors as the dynamic driving forces for the fabrication of smart biointerfaces. Several typical biological stimuli, such as glycemic volatility, body temperature fluctuations, regional disparity of pH values, and specific biomolecules, were tactfully involved in the developed systems. In the Account paper, they highlight the strategies they have used on the exploitation of dynamic synthetic biointerfaces based on the above three types of reversible chemical interactions. The potential applications of these developed dynamic systems, including fundamental cell biology, surface engineering of biomaterials, scaffold-free tissue engineering, cell-based cancer diagnosis and drug targeting cancer therapy, were also introduced, respectively. Based on the above related research, Pan’s group has published plenty of high-level peer-reviewed papers, including J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2014, 136, 6203; Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., 2018. 57, 7878; Adv. Funct. Mater., 2017, 27, 1605985; Small, 2018, 4 (13), 1703968; Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., 2011, 50, 11731; Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., 2013, 52, 1511; Small, 2019, 15, 180391; Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., 2013, 52, 6907; Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., 2017, 56, 15959; J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2016, 138, 15078 and so on. These studies provided effective solutions for the bionic design and intellectualization of advanced biomaterials, which would play a continuously and increasingly significant role in bridging the gap between chemistry and biology.

Accounts of Chemical Research is one of the most authoritative review journals in the field of chemistry and materials, and latest impact factor (2017) is 20.955. It is a special review journal that focuses on the systematic work from the corresponding authors' own research groups. The publication of this invited paper indicated that Pan’s research group in JSU has been widely recognized by the international scientists, owing to their cutting-edge research work in the field of intelligent biological materials.
